What a Medicare broker does, and how it differs from an agent
What is a Medicare broker? A Medicare broker is a licensed advisor who compares Medicare plans from multiple insurance carriers and helps you review your options.
The difference between a Medicare broker and an agent is who they represent. A captive agent is contracted with one insurance company. An independent broker like HBS compares plans across every carrier HBS represents.
If you’ve been searching for a “Medicare agent near me,” ask which insurance carriers the advisor represents. This helps you understand how many companies are included in the comparison.
There is never a fee for our service. Carriers compensate us directly, so your premium is the same whether you work with us or enroll on your own.
A Medicare broker can be especially helpful when your Medicare coverage or circumstances change:
- Turning 65: You're enrolling in Medicare for the first time.
- Plan changes: Your plan changed or your premium went up.
- Network changes: A doctor left your plan's network.
HBS can help you review your Medicare options when one of these changes affects your coverage.
How many Medicare carriers we compare
HBS compares Medicare plans from the local and national carriers we represent. Because HBS is independent, we compare plans across every carrier we represent rather than working with a single insurance company.
The carrier list can change as carriers enter or leave the Medicare market each year. Your advisor reviews your plan with you every year and can help you compare the options available at that time.
We also check your actual prescription list against each plan’s formulary before recommending one.
Ask your HBS advisor for the current list of Medicare carriers we represent.
The parts of Medicare Simplified
Part A: Hospital insurance
Inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, and hospice. Usually premium-free if you paid Medicare taxes long enough.
Part B: Medical insurance
Doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and durable medical equipment. Part B has a monthly premium.
Part C (Medicare Advantage)
An alternative to Original Medicare that provides Part A and Part B benefits through a private insurance plan. It may include prescription drug coverage and other benefits.
Part D: Prescription drugs
Prescription drug coverage. We check your actual prescription list against each plan's formulary before recommending one.
Medigap: Medicare Supplement
Medigap is not a Medicare part. It is a separate policy that works with Original Medicare to help cover certain out-of-pocket costs.
Dental, vision & hearing
Original Medicare generally does not cover routine dental, vision, or hearing services. Some private Medicare coverage may include these benefits.

What happens every fall: your annual Medicare review
Every fall, your HBS advisor reviews your Medicare plan with you. Your plan can change its premium, drug list, or doctor network for the coming year.
During the October 15 to December 7 Open Enrollment Period, you can review your options and make changes for coverage starting January 1.
If you are already enrolled in Medicare Advantage, you also have a January 1 to March 31 Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period. During this window, you can switch to another Medicare Advantage plan or return to Original Medicare.
For official enrollment dates and rules, see Medicare.gov’s Joining a plan guidance.
During your annual review, your HBS advisor:
- Checks your actual prescriptions against the available plan formularies.
- Reviews whether your doctors are still in the plan's network.
- Compares the costs of your current coverage with the available options.
You decide whether to stay with your current plan or switch. If you stay, your advisor is still there to help with questions and changes. If you switch, HBS helps with the enrollment process.
The advisor who enrolled you is the same advisor who reviews your plan every year.
